In addition to the fish sampling activities, we undertook an analysis of conditions in flowing water that creates standing waves. Two students and Bob Sharp constructed a flow channel with a plexiglass face 8’ long. The trough was adjustable with respect of angle and flow rates. Water was pumped into a catch box at the top of the trough, then flowed into a 45 gal drum at the bottom of the trough, We placed rare earth magnets in the base, then changed the base so that it could be shaped. Different shapes with washers could be fastened to the base in different locations. We then tested various forms to see what conditions created standing waves.
Following a number of hours exploring wave forms using different shapes, different flow rates and different depressions in the substrate The ES students developed the following power point.
