Studies in Energy Conservation
ES approached this as a student insulation challenge: This challenge to designed to explore ways in which insulation may play a role in reducing energy movement through insulation. The challenge is to design a system the keeps an ice cube from losing weight over a period of time. Students design an insulation system that will keep and ice cube from melting when kept in a classroom overnight. Students are given a 100 gram ice cube at a uniform temperature to begin with, They weigh the ice cube to the nearest .1 gram, place the ice cube in their insulating container and then weigh the ice cube after the time period. The winner is the one with the most remaining weight of ice. Students were given an opportunity to review their process and give them a second and third trial. They then compared the results from the sets of trials.
