Fire and Logging Landscape Impacts
Dann Farr, with the Foothills Model Forest, designed a study protocol that examined an argument made by commercial forestry companies. The argument posited that fire and clear cuts had similar impacts on the landscape. Dann Farr applied studies of forest structure to areas that had been cut or burned over a period of 60 years. These studies indicated that fire and clear cuts have different short and long term impacts on the landscape.
In 1996 the ES class took part in a training session on how to use this protocol. Since that time ES classes have used this protocol for more than 10 tears. While the protocol is complex, it provides a wide variety of studies that link together that gives insight intro the ecology of forests. The data sheet shown below describes that data collected in a forest structure analysis. In addition to these categories, surveyors record bird and wildlife signs and/or sightings.
