B.C. Ministry of Forests, Forest Science Program initiated an integrated research program aimed at a better ecological understanding of the coastal blanket bog – upland forest complex of the CWHvh2. Ultimately, we must assess the feasibility of harvesting these areas in a responsible and sustainable manner and, where it is deemed appropriate, provide management guidelines for doing so.
In 2000, when the ES class was staying at the Cannery National Park, we met with and took part in a brief fies study with forestry scientists from UBC. They were looking at seedling survival problems on steep slopes that had been logged as far back as forty years. The seedling survival rate was less than 20%. The ES class to part in a seedling study by setting out two 50 meter transects and counting all surviving seedlings and recording their height and health 5 meter either side of the transect.
Our survey confirmed their identification of the problem. We were all wet by the end of the 50 meters even though it was not raining. The moss was typically knee deep and very wet. The pH of the plots ran from 5.6 to 6.4 using hydrion strips. We found about 10 surviving seedlings in total.
We concluded that the logging practices used in cutting the area we were in was inappropriate. The old growth forest consumed water that kept the forest floor far direr.
