Red Squirrel studies
The Squirrel Camp with the Arctic Institute Ecology studies followed many red squirrel questions. Researchers set out and mapped one km by 1 km study areas divided into 10 meter blocks. Within these study areas, they live trapped, tagged and observed squirrel behavior and ecology. ES classes were part of the tagging and mapping process. Once a lactating female squirrel was identified, students would climb trees to their nests, and recover the young and bring them down for tagging, health assessment and lice infestation. Once identified, the young were returned to their nests where the female would check out the young and feed them. The activity appeared to have little impact on the mothers or the young. |
