Longshore Drift
ES participation in a number of Shorekeepers plots alerted students to patterns of erosion and deposition and how the are affected by exposure, beach energy, and the composition of the beach and foreshore. The Booth Channel is exposed to a long reach and the shore line is dramatically altered in the winter high tides with a north westerly wind.
On the second survey of Booth Channel we noticed dramatic changes to the drift piles, to the substrate of the upper intertidal zone. We also noticed that much of the finer material (silt sand and gravel) was deposited further down the channel. Big boulder had moved and we were able from out previous map, show these boulders also moved further down the channel. We notice and measured the volume of fine materials that accumulated behind permanent objects. We also noted the erosion on the windward side of the concrete abutment supporting the stairs. The stair base was becoming threatened by the winter storm actions when high tides occurred.
