Identifying the Impacts of Clear Cuts on a Cave
In the late 1990's the B.C. Forest Services operated a number of provincial forestry parks and were responsible for managing a number special natural features. Caves on Vancouver Island fell into this range of special features. Many Caves were identified during logging activities. In 1998 B.C. Forest Services asked ES classes to map the recent infill of caves caused by changes in runoff and sedimentation due to logging practices. The ES class was involved in mapping the accumulated gravel in two caves in areas that had recently been clearcut. Caves west of Campbell river that had been identified during a logging operation. The class used, tapes to measure the volume of gravel and cobbles that had filled in cave channels. We discovered recent infill to a depth of 2 meters had filled the bottom of a chamber. Epikarst features and the unsorted gravels and boulders indicated a fairly recent feature. The students concluded that rains through the clear cut had caused an increase in cave sedimentation.
