Ford Lake Wet Land Drainage
The image to the right shows much of the drainage basin feeding Ford Lake. A small ephemeral creek feeds the lake from the north and seeps and springs flow from the north, west and south east to create wetlands. These have been mowed and ditches have been created to dry the wetlands more quickly so they can be used for growing hay. |
Drainage is a small creek flowing out of the south end of the lake. This flow is the major contributor of water to Fulford Creek. Fulford Creek is a salmon spawning creek and therefore warrants special attention form the DFO stream keepers program. Our concern was that the ditching the wetlands would increase the fluctuation of water levels in Fulford Creek thereby threatening spawning processes.
In order to measure these changes we places a water level data logger at the Bateman's pier and established a "V" notch weir that could be attached to the exit culvert to measure creek flows. We were unaware of the ditching process until after the event occurred so we do not have flow data prior to this event.
