Tree planting at Marsh Lake,
Overview description Yukon Forestry approached Wood Street school with a request to plant an area near Whitehorse that had been clear cut logged three years earlier. Forestry gave ES 11 and ACES 10 10,000 seedlings to plant in the clear-cut near the March Lake dump in 1998. We planted all the trees on a day and marked approximately 200 trees. We then went back a year later to assess the number that survived and the growth rate of the surviving trees.
Community interest or concern
Duration of study and numbers involved The Marsh Lake planting is open to frequent visits. It has been resurveyed in 2001 and 2003.
Protocols followed and resources. The classes were given lessons in tree planting , were given an opportunity to plant a few, then the plantings were assessed by Yukon Forestry personnel to determine if they were effectively planted. The classes (nearly 60 students) then spent the day planting seedlings along transects that had been laid out in advance to ensure appropriate spacing.
