Haines Junction Forestry: Community involvement
The Alsek Renewable Resource Council (ARRC) is a voice for local community members in managing our renewable resources, such as fish, wildlife and forests. The ARRC began its work in 1995 after the signing of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations (CAFN) Final Agreement. The Final Agreement created the ARRC as the “primary instrument for local renewable resources management.”
ES classes from 1995 to 2010 conducted a wide variety of forestry studies within the ARRC region. Different classes made presentation respecting their research and findings. The ARRC welcomes and encouraged out involvement and input.
In 1999 the ARRC request forestry re assess the allowable annual harvest based on the dendrochronology ES students had been conducting. This resulted in a reduction from 35000 cubic meters annually to 5000 cubic meters annually.
Over the years the ARRC has supported student research and encourage our input and direction regarding the types of studies we could undertake that would benefit their communty.
