Cave Mapping
By using the A number of caves were found during logging activities in the Campbell River area. These were reported to BC Forest Services which in turn conducted further investigations. During three visits to the area ES 11 classes were involved in mapping these caves using clinometers, 100 meter tapes and survey compass.
By using all three, students were able to 3D map the major cave chambers. They measured the angle of dip, the distance and the direction for each segment of the cave. We mapped only those regions that were accessible, no smaller than a crawl and drops less than 2 meters. Students were able to recreate a 3D computer image for each of these legs of the cave layout.
