The Arctic Institute is has been undertaking a variety of ecological, and geographical studies over the past 15 years. A major 15 year study has explored many aspects of the Arctic hare life cycle. These studies have generally been located along the Alaska Highway between the Jarvis River and Kluane Lake. A number of large grids have been surveyed throughout this region and have been the focus of some of the more intensive studies. Activity at the institute has tapered of following the completion the intensive hare population cycle studies. As a result of the declining activity many of the vegetation studies that require ongoing monitoring have been set aside.
The Experiential Science 11 class, in cooperation with the Arctic Institute and Liz Hoeffer , have established two forest structure plots in tow of the grids. Two 30 m equilateral triangles were set up in Loyds grid and the Gravel Pit grid. Protocol: We have been following the forest structure analysis established by the Foothills Model Forest. We have supplemented these data with more detailed study of trees and seedlings in each of the plots. Forest Structure Analysis: Tree study: Each tree within the plot has been numbered. Information respecting species, diameter, height, health and age has been cataloged and is maintained on an annual basis. Seedling Study: Each seedling ( a tree less than 2 m in height) within the plot has been numbered. Information respecting species, height, leader length ,health, competition, age and whether it has been nibbled or damaged has been catalogued and is maintained on an annual basis. Data: Data from the two plots is included in this web site. More detailed information has been forwarded to Liz and the Arctic Institute. |
